I think you are correct that the New Year is the traditional start of the deep clean. Like the Japanese, the big house clean in Scotland is (supposed to be) done before the New Year. As well as paying all your bills, so you start off the year with a clean slate.

Perhaps the Spring clean became popular because when the sun comes out you can see the dust!

Haha, that might be true! So sorry I haven't replied to your comment sooner, I must have missed the notification. It's really interesting to hear that the traditional time for the Scottish big clean is the new year. I had no idea about that. Scotland seems to make so much more of the new year traditions than we do across the border, I've often thought of visiting for the new year celebrations.

Fascinating, as always, Natalie. Will look out for the book on women's art too. And poor penguins!

Thanks for commenting Lucy. So sorry I haven't replied sooner, not sure what happened to the notification... I just bought Jennifer Higgie's previous book 'The Mirror and the Palette' about women's self portraits. Have you seen it? If not I'll let you know what it's like.

As usual I'm terribly late for the party. It's been hard to even keep up with posts on Instagram. I'd have loved all the talks you've mentioned. There's still so much to say about women artists and writers! Last year I got a small Penguin edition with excerpts from Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market, which I now feel anxious to get started. I saw the trailer for the Great White Silence and it does look like a horror scifi film. So fascinating! And interesting what some people said in the comments about the big clean before the new year in Scotland. Thats exactly what I had planned to do but heatwaves got in the way.

Thanks Diana, no worries at all about being late to the party. Hope the weather is cooling down for you. I really struggle to get anything done in the heat. I can just about manage to water the garden in the early mornings but that's all. Goblin Market is such a strange and interesting poem! I would love to hear your thoughts on it. I think you would love Cheltenham Literature Festival. During the pandemic they sold a digital pass and streamed the events live on the internet for a flat fee. I wish they would do it again, it was amazing to see so many different things. I'll let you know if I see them streaming it again in the future.

I can happily say that the weather has cooled down, but, of course its still summer. And with the planet getting hotter every year, autumn weather is not to be expected for real till late April I'd think. I share your struggle with heat. I feel sleepy, tired and just waiting for night time. About Goblin Market, there seems to be all kinds of ways of looking into it. From a feminist point of view to a purely bizarre one. Better read it myself and see how I feel about it. And I'd appreciate you'd let me know about future events of Cheltenham. I do miss this sort of event.

I haven't used it myself, but it might be worth a look if you're interested in literary events: https://www.hayfestival.com/p-1408-hay-player-annual-subscription.aspx?skinid=16&currencysetting=GBP
